Skull – lateral canine X-ray positioning guide




  • Lateral recumbency
  • Affected side down
  • Use a foam pad under the dog’s nose (not a sandbag)
  • Ensure ET tube straight as this can twist the head
  • Ensure collar removed
  • Centre over zygomatic arch
  • Collimate to include all of nasal bones and vault of skull
  • Ensure L/R marker in primary beam.

What to look for

  • Ensure a good lateral - look for superimposition of mandible, teeth and skull vault.

Top tips

  • Due to magnification it can be tricky on large dogs to get a perfectly superimposed lateral, but ensure the region of interest is lateral
